Reviewed by Nick Christenson, npc lvrevealed. During these times, the best book available on playing no-limit Texas hold'em poker was Pot-limit and No-limit Poker by Bob Ciaffone and Stewart Reuben.
Since then, a lot of great information has been published on the game. Into this market comes Ciaffone's second book on the subject, No-limit Holdem Poker. In various discussion groups there has been a lot made of the difference between old school and new school no-limit hold'em. The old school is stereotyped by tight, cautious play and large bets relative to the pot size , whereas the new school seems to favor a looser, more aggressive style using smaller bet sizes.
Ciaffone's advice falls squarely in the old school camp, largely picking up where he left off in Pot-limit and No-limit Poker. At the same time, he does provide some specific information relevant to tournament and online play as well.
The source of the material in the book is primarily a series of magazine articles Ciaffone has written. One doesn't have to read very far along in the book for this to become evident, and there's nothing wrong with using articles as source material for a poker book. In this case, though, I think it would have been better if Ciaffone had taken more time to weave his source material into a more coherent whole.
The episodic nature of the original format means that there's a lot of repetition and discourse that isn't necessary, and this could have been safely excised as it was turned into a book. On a similar note, in his previous self-published books, Ciaffone has done a good job editing them.
